    Default Elk in CO...

I am not expert but I have seen a decent amount of Elk in the lower foothills the last few weeks mountain biking. It seems odd to me that they are this low this time of year....just figured I would mention this...

Maybe they will stay there so I won't have to do as much hiking to higher elevations.

In summer they find refuge from the heat in lower drainages. They will start moving back up soon!

I imagine your M biking thru the Genesse herd.
There are many herds that live in the foothills year round, as the season starts they will find private ground to hide on. Heck theres 50 or so that rarely get 2 miles from rolling hills country club.

I hear ya and thought that as well. It is just funny, as I have seen Elk almost every time out and this has ranged from Walker Ranch in Boulder county to Buff Creek area, so I am sure these are different herds. Seeing them at Waterton was a surprise though.

Wait 5 yrs, we will see some serious changes in ranges/migration routes after the beetle kill catches

The herd should be strong as I have not shot one in several years.

I spent the weekend riding up in the mountains, and they have actually been very progressive is cutting down dead trees. Which is around 70-80% of the trees where I was at. You would just all of sudden go through an area that has been cut. So I think if this is state wide, lots of folks are not going to recognize the areas they have hunted in the past...Ben
