    Default Recurve Bow Help

I was given/handed down a old recuve a few weeks ago and would like to shoot it but it doesn't have a string. I know nothing about recurve's, How do I know what length string to order? Do i just measure the lenght of the bow?? Do recurve's have a set draw length like compound bows? Sorry for the ignorance, any help would be appreciated.

Generally you can measure along the limbs tip to tip and subtract 5 inches, that should get you close.

This is from the AMO bow standards:

    AMO CONVENTIONAL

    BOW LENGTH STANDARD

AMO Bow Length Standard is designated to be three inches longer than AMO

Bow String Master that braces bow at proper String or Brace Height. Bow String

Master will carry only the bow length designation. Example: A Bow String

Master designated as AMO 66” (bow length) will have an actual length under

    tension of 63”.

Take any piece of thin rope. Insert it properly on the lower limb, run it straight towards the top limb (as if you were to string the bow) and mark the rope where it reaches the lower part of the centre grooove at the back of the top limb. This measurement shold produce a string length that should put you around the higher recommended brace height range for that given bow. It depends quite a bit on the string material used. If it is an old recurve that needs dacron B50 material, then you´ll be fine after it stretches "a little". If it is a modern recurve accepting low stretch fibers, then you might get a slightly bigger than needed B.H., so err on the long side then.
