Default Bow for a 6 year old?

My oldest son will be turning 6 in a month. I want him to start shooting with me but I am not sure what kind of bow to get him. He is tall but not that strong. Im worried about draw weight and weather or not to get him a compound or re curve . I dont want to confuse him with a release or a sight with alot of pins but he does learn quick. He can hit a bulls eye at 30 yards with a 22 open sight so I know he understands what a sight does.
Any info would help me out.

Recurves make a lot of sense for first time archers. Kids grow fast and not having to change the draw length is convenient. Plus a lightweight recurve can be had on the cheap and cheap is the way to roll when simply gauging interest. If he or she takes an interest you can look into picking up a compound at that time.

As for compounds, my son shoots a Bear Apprentice 2 and I think its a great bow for a youngster. Its adjustable from 15-27 inches and 15 to 60 lbs... This is a little misleading, as it will only reach the lowest weights at the shortest lengths and the highest weights at the longest lengths, but it seems to work pretty well for most kids. It does offer a 15lb weight adjustment at any given length, as well. The Apprentice 2 can be had, complete with a Whisker Biscuit, fiber optic sight, quiver, loop and peep for under $300. I would feel good recommending it to anyone.

Here is my 7 year old shooting his Winchester Thunderbolt. So far I am very impressed with this bow. I figure it will take him to 12-14 years of age. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1333798164.522853.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1333798220.445482.jpg

I have my son shooting a recurve now. I'm going to get him a Diamond Atomic soon. I had a Nuke Ice for him, but it was...not the best bow for him at the time.

I have a Mission Menace that my son started with. May be up for sale soon. Very adjustable bow that can cover almost A-Z.

My son started with the youth bow from Alpine and my daughter started with a Parker Buckshot. Both were good bows. The good thing is you can usually find a deal on these on AT since kids decide they don't want to shoot anymore or just outgrow the bows. My son is still shooting but my daughter gave it up for horses.

Thanks to everyone for there input. I ended up getting him a Mini Genesis. It was the only bow he could pull back that wasn't a play toy. They had a real nice diamond, dropped it down to 5.5lbs pull but the little guy couldn't get it back. Anyhow, He is happy with the Genesis and was doing rather well with it. Its a compound but no let off like a recurve and with his draw he has a ways to go to out grow it. I haven't put a sight on it yet, just want him to get use to pulling it back and holding it right. He seems to be learning quick . Oh yeah, good thing the bow shop has a indoor range. made it convenient to purchase a arm guard after he got him self twice..

    Thanks again .
