Well...A spud is the rod used to make holes in the ice before there were augers, and sometimes still if conditions dictate, but here on Sag bay when conditions are as they have been this year, you NEED to have a spud in your hand testing the ice with a good whack ahead of you if you are going somewhere you haven't traveled yet... It is usually just a first/last ice precaution for th most part, usually by now a good many of us are spending a lot of time 8-10 miles out on the bay catching walleye...not so much this year:censored2:.
Oh, and how much for the boots? Sure could come in handy sometimes, LOL.
Yeah, walleye and perch are about the best things to come out of water. Can't say which I prefer...both very good(if you can get past the knowlegde that they may hve spent time in the sag. river, not that it matters since the river flows into the bay anyway)
I won't say the river is highly polluted, but lets just say that not only do we have many big plants, etc, with hot water discharges, but every time it rains much the river gets "stocked with browns"
from the treatment plants.

"Its just a BABY RUTH".
Ya'll got me wantin to go Icefishin.
Any spearin up der?
That was my favorite, darkhouse, sprinke egg shells on the bottom, about 8' of water, waitin to stab a pike with a pitchfork.![]()
Pike spearing is a very popular thing on some parts of the bay, as well as many of the inland lakes. I have never been into it, but I know a few guys who are doing well right now. Also, if you want a real challenge, some of the lakes allow perch spearing. If spearing a pike were "hitting the target", a perch would be the "x ring", lol.
Its tough to spear perch, Ive tried and they had huge perch on lake plantangenet, heck it tough to spear a 10 lb pike.
Its fun sitting in the dark listenin to the Ockey game on the radio.... couple beers.
Im gonna have to look into ice fishin/spearin on the williams fork Res. here, I fly fish for Pike there and do OK in the spring.
