The hog tournament at Riverview Ranch started on Friday Feb. 1 2008. I was only planning on hunting Saturday so I drove up to Ada Friday night. When I arrived everyone was just getting back to the lodge and they told me only one hog had been stuck but they couldn't locate him. Introductions were done all around and we just fell in to BSing with each other like we had been friends forever. Rod had gotten there ahead of me and Lance was about 30 minutes behind me. When Lance got there he was sick and felt like hammered crap so we got to go to sleep for a change. Saturday morning we woke up at 5:00 am and headed for the ranch. At the ranch we drew for stands for the morning hunt. I drew the hole and headed out to my stand with hopes of having my hog down pretty quick. I guess the hogs decided that they wanted to sleep in cause I only saw a few 60 pounders and they stayed down in the draw out of range. When I got back to the skinning shed it seemed that I was not the only one empty handed. Out of ten hunters only one arrow had been flung and it was a miss. Rod, Lance, and me headed to town and had a huge breakfast then we headed back to the ranch. I decided to get the GTO out and do a little shooting. I set my block target up a 20 yards and shot 4 shots. When I got back to my bow from pulling my arrows out of the target Lance and 2 other guys had their bows out. Lance set his block target at 30 yards and we all shot it. Then Lance and I shot a deer target at 40 yards once each. We moved his target out to 50 yards and all 4 of us shot 3 arrows each. Then we moved back to 60 yards and repeated the drill. When we moved back to 70 yards the other 2 guys dropped out. Lance and I both shot 3 arrows with decent success. Lance hit the 10 ring on his last shot. We moved the target back to 80 yards and Lance shot his 3 arrows at the target and they all 3 hit slighly right due to a slight cross wind. I shot my first 2 arrows and and they both hit slightly right. I made a correction and let the 3 arrow fly, it hit the center circle just to the right of the 10 ring. We put our bows up and rested a little while after that. We drew stands for the afternoon hunt and headed out to our stands. I drew stand 4 which should have been an awesome stand for the evening. If I had a rifle in the stand with me that evening I would have been done because I saw about 100 head of hogs but they just wouldn't come into range. Unlike the rest of the crew me, Lance and Rod stayed with our bows the rest got out the rifles. When we got back to the skinning shed 4 hogs had been shot. The biggest of the hogs was 110 pounds which left the 125 pound weight class wide open. We headed back to the lodge and watched hunting videos for awile then went to sleep. We woke up Sunday morning and I decided to hunt the morning hunt. We got to pick our stands since there was only 4 of us hunting. I picked stand 6 because I had hunted it during the last tournament and I saw a bunch of hogs. The wind got up pretty high and I guess the hogs decided to lay up cause none of us saw anything to shoot at. I didn't even see a hog at all. When we got back to the skinning shed Lance decided to try a spot and stalk hunt with Tim West so they headed out. I will let Lance go into detail about his hunt but he came back with a big hog. After looking at some of the deer Tim had on his wall I headed out for a spot and stalk with Tim. Lance came along and filmed the hunt for me. We started in a corner were nobody had been hunting because the brush was rael thick and Tim said the hogs like to bed down in that cornr. Well we hadn't gotten very far into the brush when we spotted some hogs bedded down out in front of us about 100 yards. We had the wind in our face and we slipped up to within 27 yards. I looked for a hole in the brush to slip an arrow through but couldn't find a decent shot so I eased up another 6 or 7 yards. I could see a little opening in the brush that gave me a head shot on a nice hog. I came to full draw and let the arrow fly. It hit the hog in the side of the head and he jumped up and ran at me. All of this is on video until Lance dropped the camera to pull his pistol since the hog was running straight at us. The hog turned just before he got to me and ran up the hill. We did another spot and stalk after that to try and get Rod a shot at a hog but with no success. We saw lots of hogs but they didn't give him a clean shot. He ended up getting a getting a nice hog off a stand that evening. I won the meat hog class and Lance won the trophy hog class. Both of us won a 5 day guided whitetail hunt at Riverview ranch.
