Question regarding bow/cam lock up

During Pete's interview on Bowcast, he commented on earlier Elite cams having a long draw stop slot. He added, depending on the stop position within the slot, bow lock up may occur. This kind of got me wondering.
I have a 8.5 Z28 which is set up perfect for me, but have adjustment room within the slot if desired.
My question is, am I at risk to lock my bow up if I was move the stop to its maximum adjustment. And if I did, how does one safely let down the bow in this situation.

As long as your stops are in the slots you are fine, Pete was referring to the older elites(08 and prior) that had modular cams, the slot was long enough to accomodate stop positions for all dl's not just a slight adjustment, and say you changed mods from 30" to 27" and forgot to move the stop...you would be in danger of lock-up.


If you ever experience a lock up no matter what the bow is, about all you can do is get it in a press asap and hope it doesn't let go before you do...

You don't need to worry about locking it up with the draw specific cams unless you're are building a fankenbow. Also, you will lock it up if you remove the draw stops so keep them in there. Pete also said on bowcast that the new cams have a way to prevent the bow from locking up even with the long draw stop. Finally, if you do lock one up, just use a bow press to put the string back on track.

Have they updated the '10 and later cams now to prevent lock up when drawing without the draw stops installed?

This is an area in which I am an expert having locked up countless times various models of Elites. Another way to lock one up (my last a couple days ago) is to leave the mods off. I have found for me, I must never leave something undone thinking, " I will get to it tomorrow". Just plain forgot the mods were not installed.

I usually lock one up leaving the stops off after pressing a bow or just not having put them in. The first time, well lets just say I threw those underwear away. I have heard stories of people throwing the bow down and it going off and destroying the bow. My advice is to stay as calm as possible and if you do not have a bow press, put it in your trunk and go to a shop. If you have a press, put it in, press it as little as possible (it is already over drawn) and remove string and cables (string probably fell off anyway) and release the limbs. Then do the reverse, press the bow and attach the strings. I have (knock on wood) never damaged a bow by locking one up. It looks pretty scary seeing the limbs so bent and I am sure it could be very dangerous if a cable or limb broke.

My advice is 1.not to leave a bow in a condition that it will definitely lock up (no stops, no mods,etc) 2. always use a draw board before shooting to ensure the cams will not lock up when drawn. 3. never put off work on one that will result in a lock up the next day, if impossible, put a note on it or something noting "do not shoot".

Hope it never happens to you but if it does, don't throw it down.

How do you forget the mods? The strings attach in 2 places on the mods, how would you lock it up if the strings were not attached?

Think he means with '08 and earlier cams.
