My TT hunt write up.
Well Friday Jan. 18 2008 started out just like a normal day for me. The alarm went off at 4:45 a.m. just like it always does. But this time I was up and ready to go . Not to work but to head south to some of the most beautiful landscape Texas has to offer. We were loading the truck to head to Thompson Temple's Rocky Top Ranch to hunt exotic rams. There was to be a group of 16 there with us comprised of family and friends. Aaron and Brian met us at our place and we pulled out the drive by 6:00 a.m. and started out journey. We then met up with my dad, brother, sister in-law,and 2 nephew's just outside of Weatherford and then the race was on. We made pretty good time with only a couple of bathroom breaks and one stop for fuel in Junction TX. After a quick bite and topping of the tanks the 1.5 hour drie took not time at all to arrive at the ranch gate. Once inside we met up with Wes,Jason and Duean and discussed the game plan on sleeping arrangements. Then it was down to business. It did not take long for Wes to pick out a Corsican that was in a group the we were watching from a hill top. A quick change of clothes and the stalk was on. But you can read about it in his write up. All I will say is it was great to have been apart of the hunt. After that we headed out to set up a couple of pop-ups for the evening hunt. After we had finshed wit that we went to camp to ready ourselves for the evening hunt. Only to find that Duean and scored him self a really nice Rambo. That evening my son Chance,BJ and myself sat in the Double Bull that we set up. We were going to try and get Chance a shot at a really nice Rambo that we had spotted eariler in the day. We sat to dark and only saw a group of Ewes and babies. SO it was back to camp for dinner. When we arrived back at camp the rest of our group had arrived. Dave,Rod and Kyle had made there way to the ranch alittle later than the rest of us so they did not get to put in a hunt that evening but were ready to go never the less. After a couple of Burgers and beverages and some great conversation. It ws off to bed to rest for the next day. We slept in a bit on Sat. and headed out to the stand around 7:00 a.m. It did not take long and a good group of ram's came in to the set up. The Rambo we were after was there but he was an old smart ram and he knew something was not right and stayed just out of range of Chance and his crossbow. After many long minutes the heard moved on and the Rambo was gone. But oh well Chance said he would just try again. (This kid is awsome when it comes to understanding whant hunting is.) We watched the ram's dissapear down a trail. We had taken our youngest son Huntter with us to the blind and he was getting cold about this time so I chose to be the one to get out and take him to camp to warm up and then I would return with the truck to pick up BJ and Chance. After getting the truck I arrivedback at the stand to find my nephew walking up the trail with a huge grin on his face. Just like before he cant tell you his story. All I will say is that the Rambo Chance was after was dead and he is huge. We got back to camp and ate some great breakfast and head all the stories of the morning hunts. There were a few shots taken but no animals were hit. After eating BJ decided to go and try to get a shot a a really nice 4 horn ram that she had seen. Her storie is a good one to hear and the whole thing was caught on video Thanks to Wes. She will be telling the whole story her self later. By the time the evening hunt came around the score was Wes1,Duean2(sometime after breakfast he got a New Zeland goat),Quinton1,BJ1,Dave1(he also scored on a Painted Desert right after breakfast)Kyle1(First ever bow kill on a good Rambo)Jerry1(he got a Painted Desert as well not long after lunch). Myself and Dave were going to head to one of the pop-ups. BJ,Chance and Quinton were heading to the other pop-up and Brian was going to set up on the hill top and watch down towards where we were at and just see if he could spot anything that had made it past us. But he never made it when we pasted by a cliff area on our way Brian spoted a nice Mouflon Type he had been after all day.He can finish this story. It is a great ram though. Me and Dave made it to the blind a setteled in for the hunt. We had not been there long a nd a few ram's showed up but they were not what I was looking for. So we sat and watched the ram's and talked to catch up with each other on what was going on in our lives since it had been too many months since we last saw each other. As we sat and enjoyed the view off in the distance we heard the sweetest sound ony dad could ask to hear THAWACK!!!! I smiled and told gave that I was supper happy that sound could only mean one thing. Chance had shot him self a ram!!!!!!!! It took everything for me not to jump up and bust out of there with and scare all the ram's away and run to go see what he had shot. But I sat and waited and waite and waited. The rams all left and Dave and I were just about to head out when we looked up and saw a really BIG Painted Desert heading our way. So we got ready to take the shot since that is one of the ram's that is high on my list. Well this dude was smart he stayed standing head to me for for what seemed for ever and then right as he turned to give me a braodside shot I heard what sounded like horses running at us and the ram bolted up the hill. It was Aaron and Quinton they did not know we were still in the blind and were heading back to camp . But that is ok that is part of hunting. We hurried and got our stuff together and got back tp camp to find Chance with a Monster smile on his face and a really nice Rambo on the ground. I am so proud of him. That night was lots and lots of food and fun. But I was beat and headed to bed around 11:00 p.m. Sunday morning arrived and this time I was joined by Jason in the blind. We were both videoing and both had our sights set on ram's that were comeing into this set up. I bet if someone would have just walked up and not know me and him were in there they would not have had wordls to describe it.But we got setteled and everything was perfect now we just needed ram's to show up. We sat and jod with each other and watch as a few of the ram's we did not want came by. Then off in the distance we heard Katie shoot(score1 more for the hunters New Zeland). About 15 minutes later we hear a THAWACK come from the other pop-up. Little did we know that by this time almost everyone out there had taken a ram but Rod,Jason and my self(Aaron scored a Corsican,Nathan scored a Black Hawiian,Brian scored his second a Painted Desert) The sun kept on riseing and the ram's still were a no show at our spot. We had decided that we were going to get out of the blind in 15 more minutes and try to stalk up on them. Well as fait would have it the ram's started to show right when the clock was at 14 min. and 59 sec. but we had them there and the cameras were rolling. Now we had a really hard choice to make since almost every ram that was coming is was one that we would both like to have taken home with us. After a short debate I decide I was going to take a really nice looking Corsican ram that I was sure would make Glod and had a beard on him that was almost touching the ground. It did not take me long to get set and wait for him to give me a shot. I drew my Elite Synergy setteled my 20 yard pin and sent my PINK Victory arrow and Rage 2 blade zipping to its target. With a quick jolt the ram was off and heading up the hill. As I watching him I could see the blood comeing from him and I knew he was going to go down soon. But wouldnt you know it all the other ram's never even heard me shoot and were still standing there right in front of us. Jason and I highfived and then focused our attention on another Corsican that was a Monster. It did not take alot of talking to get Jason all excited about taking this for sure Gold ram. I nevr even stopped recording from my ram and focused in on this one. Jason being lefthanded made it easy for him to shoot with out me haveing to move. With a quick zip his arrow was laying on the far side of the ram covered in blood and the ram was heading up the hill on the same trail that my ram had gone up. Well more highfives and Congrats to each other. After we had gotten out of the blind several of the other showed up and we started our tracking. We had only made it about 20 yards and we heard a crash and looked up just in time to see Jasons ram rolling down the hill. More highfives and Congrats. Me and BJ headed up the hill on the bloodtrail of my ram only to find him not 30 yards ahead and still heading away(Man this dude id tough) We quickly slipped up and around to get in front of him and set up at a spot were we thought he would cross. A few short second's later and there was a second Victory Arrow and Rage 2blade in him and this time he did not go 20 yards and piled up on the rocks. Dave helped me get the ram down the hill and we headed back to camp to tally up the damage for the weekend.Rod stayed behind for a little while to try and seal the deal but never did not for lack of shots offerd but he said it was not the perfect shot and he would rather wait than rush it(That is awsome that he hunts by his ethics and wont change).Wes and BJ also stayed behind and Wes brought back his second ram of the weekend. All in all this was one of the best times I have ever had on a hunt and I cant wait to do it again next year.
