I would guess about 90% of people walk in to a bow shop and pick out what ever bow that tickles their fancy and have it setup and shoot it for 3-4 years without anything else ever done to it again.

Lots and lots of practice. I'm finally getting comfortable with my thumb release after using it for about 2 months.
