Hiall,
I wanted to share the best day I've ever had hunting. I got to take my oldest son, Jordan 9, out with me this weekend. I'd told him I'd think about taking him hunting with me this year and he'd been asking for weeks to go. Finally took him Saturday. I gotta say he was quite a trooper. I got him up at 3:00 am, our property is about 1 1/2 hours away. We got to the property at 5:30 after stopping to get some breakfast. After getting all rigged up, we climbed into the two man ladder stand at 6:00. I'd put a surround on the stand thinking that it would help hide his movement. He did a great job of staying still til he started getting cold, 27 degrees that morning. Didn't see much early but it was fun hearing the noises of the woods and having him ask what they were. Finally, at 8:00, we heard deer coming. Only problem was I was facing the wrong way and the deer were coming in fast. As I tried to get around for a shot, the doe see me. I hear Jordan whisper "Buck". Sure enough, the doe is being chased by an 8 point and a 4. I immediately focus on the 8 but have no shot. Try as I might, I could get a good angle on him. After a minute, buck gets alarmed, snorts and is gone. I sit down and see the disappointment on Jordan's face. The rest of the morning was quiet.

At noon, we help a friend put up a ladder stand and decide to get lunch and probably head home. I figured that Jordan was tired. As we drive to get lunch he asks why we can't go back and he convinces me that he was fine to go out again. I told him that where we were at in the two man stand would work for the evening. I told him about another stand but it only fits one person but has a nice downed tree to sit by about 5 feet away. I got him settled in up against the tree where he is out of the wind and I tell him to be sure not to move around because the leaves would give us away. I climbed into the stand and check to see how Jordan is doing. He looked very comfortable. Checked on him every few minutes to make sure he sees me. after about 20 minutes, I see his head tilted forward and he is asleep. He is asleep for about 30 minutes and he wakes up just as it is getting dark. As he wakes up, a doe comes in. I took a shot and would you know it, I clip a branch I didn't see. The doe jumps but didn't run. I thought I might get another chance at her. As I get ready, we see another deer come in, a Buck. I see his body size and he looked good but could see how many points. I figured that if he presented to shot, I'd take it. Finally gives me a shot at 35 yards. I let the arrow go and hear the "pop" and the buck goes running. It was getting dark when we went to check for signs. We didn't see much and being it was dark, we decided to let him go and I would come back in the morning.

Next day, I got up and drove down by myself, got up early and figured I may as well try to fill a doe tag while I'm down there. Didn't see anything. Got down and looked for the buck Trailed it for 80 yrds and here is the result. I was so happy to be about to share this weekend with Jordan. He is really excited to go again,SOON!!!!!!

I am happy to read a story like this. It is great you could share this time with your son. I have a 4 year old that goes with me every time out, and he is addicted. Now, I am having a hard time finding a bow that will fit him.

Great story! Good to see ya'll getting the kiddos out and involved. My oldest boy (now 7) has been hunting with me and/or his dad for 3 years now and we have started taking our youngest son (almost 5) this year to sit with us and start learning the ropes.

Great story, it's great to start the kids out young. My son and daughter both went with me when they were younger but it just never stuck. Hopefully yours will stick with it after a great day like that.
