View Full Version : My new homemade press...The Soumi press

Spent the last couple nights in the shop building my version of an x-press. Built almost completely with steel and junk laying around in my shop. The square tubing is 3/16" so it is plenty strong. Used a bottle jack instead of a trailer jack though. Cost me about $50 to make because I bought the sawhorse, jack, bolts and paint.
A little shot of my basement shop too. What you don't see is that that I can shoot 20 yard indoors to that target and the walkout patio door is right in line with it if I want to go farther.

I don't know??? All I got is recurves. Waiting for my new Fire to get here which is in transit right now.
It operates just fine, adjustability is endless and it's certainly strong enough so I'm quite confident it will work just dandy. :)

Looks good, nice shop too. The only thing you may have an issue with is if you have to break a bow down completely. Replacing limbs for example. When I built my press I too had the pegs in the same position you have them in. In particular the limb pegs. When they're in that position you can't lay it down far enough to relax the limbs completely. Your riser/limb pocket pegs are correct. Here's a picture of my press so you can see the difference. In fact the spacing for the pegs is set for a Synergy and I've got it laid down just about where you would need to relax the limbs completely.

Thanks Trick,
I figured if I started with the ram about 2/3's up, I could back it down far enough to break down a bow. But I guess I won't find out until my bow is here. I'm surprised you have to lay your pegs virtually flat on a parrallel limb bow to break it down.
Won't be much work if I need to build new upper pegs though and thanks for the tip and pics. You did a real nice job on yours. I kind of rushed mine and used what I had.

Thats about the finest collection of recurves I've ever seen. One of these days I'm going to have to break down and get one.

I tell you what - there would be one appreciative guy in Colorado with tool skills, but little bow press design skills that would be ecstatic if you guys would layout a detailed plan to build one of those things.;)

Elksniper, I have some detailed plans. Send me your email address in a PM and I'll send them to you. If it's after this evening I won't be able to email them till after the first of the year.
