View Full Version : Problem with HHA Sights

I have an HHA DS-5519 sight and I found the tapes for it are only graduated to 60 yards. I called the company and asked why as there is a lot of blank area on the stick on scale. They say they didn't graduate them past 60 yards as they were afraid people would attempt shots longer than 60 yards with their sight and blame HHA if they missed. They admit the graduation on the tape is purely mathmatical but say that if people shoot badly they will blame it on their tapes. I say that people need to extend their practice ranges in order to be better hunters. Some writers claim you shouldn't take a hunting shot that is more than 20 yards less than the distance you normally practice at. Many western hunters take 60 yard shots and should therefore be practicing out to 80. How do you do that if your sight manufacturer doesn't have enough confidence in you to graduate their sight tapes for that long a shot. I suggested HHA use the full scale on each tape. Since they are graduated according to the speed of your arrow on some tapes they could include more yardage than on others. Some could easily go out to 100 yards. Am I the only one who would like for them to utilize the entire scale?

I wouldn't mind them using the whole scale. I set mine up so I would have ample room for more than 60yds and plan on marking a dash at 70, 80, and 90 if there's room. It would be easier if they'd just continue the scale though...

I agree Dave. I'm sure there is alot more room on the dial to go past 60 yards especially if you have a fast bow. When I get mine set up I'm going to mark the dial for 70 & 80 with an extra piece of label tape.

They are missing a big part of the market for sights out west. Our crazy fun shoots have targets over 100 yards. would be nice not to have to own two sights for your bow just to play and hunt.

I have this same sight. I love it, it is a great site, and although your issue doesn't effect me at all, I too am surprised that it only goes to 60 yards, especially since they offer lens kits for this site that will make shots much longer than 60 yards possible.

I've taken to using OT2 to print tapes because of this constraint....but it would be nice to find the Mylar tapes they use.

Especially since the wheel really comes into it's own at the longer ranges...."spreading" the gap between yardage marks makes it easier to set the yardage more precisely by the shooter.

3rd axis would be nice as well on these sights....not all of us have a perfect grip...consistently "not perfect" in my case!

most of the guys locally around my area that go for elk out west are sighted in to 80yds and are not afraid to shot that distance either. A friend of mine shot a mule deer last year at 70.

This is why 99% of sliders dont cut it out west, if they would just make the vert travel another half inch even. I dont know many Elk hunters that shoot 5gpp heavy arrows rule which means longer sight tapes.
From what Ive found you get a much more accurate tape if you use a program that allows you to add in the exact dynamics of each setup.

Their tape is good. They simply don't use enough of it. There is a sight in tape mounted on the wheel when you get it. You shoot the sight at 20 yds. and note what the setting is. Then you shoot the sight at 60 yds. and note the setting. You then subtract the reading at 20 yds. from the 60 yd. setting and find the tape that has that number.

These tapes are numbered from 29 (fast bow) to 72 (slow bow). This allows for very fine adjustment. With most Elite bows you will be on the fast end of the scale and there will be room to graduate the tape to 80 or more yards. The problem now is simply convincing them to do it. They build a great product but seem to have limited vision as to it's capability. On the horizontal axis, each click equals 1/8 inch @ 20 yds.

Your right for the most part they are accurate, crazy changes in fletching can create discrepencys.
Check out swords tapes that come stock, they go to 100 yrds.
