ive been kicking around the idea of getting a mountain bike for exercise and maybe to use while hunting. i think i seen where some was using a bike to ride into some spots that were not atv accessable or iegal to use. this would leave very little scent trail i figure.

so if anyone is using a mountain bike to ride into some spots can you post some pics of you set-up just so we can see how you are packing your bow and stand on it

I dont have any pics but know people who do this. They use the bow holders that go on the handlebars of atvs and just put them on their bike. For the treestand they found them little carts that you use to tow your kids around with that bolts to the bike and modified them. Most guys had them around from their kids or found them really cheap at garage sales.

I mountain bike here in CO around 3-4 days a week. It is a brutal workout for sure. I think back packs which have compression straps to hold your bow would work great...Ben

I have been utilizing a mountain bike for the last two years for bowhunting. I have been mountain biking for over 30 years and bowhunting longer. I have ridden up to deer for years and they seem unphased by the motion a mountain bike makes. I made a shoulder strap for my bow and now ride with the bow over my shoulder. This weekend I rode past 6 legal california coastal blacktails, all shooters. Our season starts in one month.

We used to bike on logging and skid roads that were closed to motorized traffic hunting elk in the Idaho panhandle. You could cover more ground in a day and get farther back from civilization. We strapped the bows to packs on our backs, sorry no pictures.

I really don't have photos either. There is nothing really to show. I personally would not mount the bow to the bike. Get a quality pack, the has compression straps for a bow and have at it. Will open up lots of more terrain. I also suggest riding trails prior to the season...Ben

I have toyed with the idea of using a mountian bike for a wile. I just never did it. The way the woods get crowded these days , it's looking like a better option to get away from the crowd.

I have been into cycling (MTB and Road) twice as long as I have been bowhunting but, have not tied them both together..........it is definately a great way to get into the woods.

Get a good light weight bike especially for mountains. Every pound will count. I'm tempted to bring mine this year elk hunting. Love my Trek. Oh, and I bought one of those trailers for my 4 year old....may have to paint it camo come September!

I usually build my own.....actually worked and managed a Cycle store for a few years but, you really can't really go wrong on any bike brand as long as it has good componants. Decide if you want a hardtail or a fully..look to see what your local dealer carries as brands; like in archery it is always great to have the support of a good shop.
Once you limited to a few types or brands, if ya need more info PM me.

I just looked over the specs on that bike and the components are really nice. I am not sure what the price is, but I think the components look great...Ben

Not as easy as I thought.

My oldest son's bike, I think he said it's a GT, has had every piece except the derailer and crank replaced since he bought it. He has spent between $2500 and $3000 on it and that was probably in the mid- late '90's since he put any new parts on, he used to race but now rides it to work. He leased a new pu and hates paying for gas.

I got a deal (STEAL $4300 list) on my Stumpjumper Pro this year and it was still over $2500. However, I find my self still rolling in the FX4 to work at $4 a gallon. I may soon just stop and pedal my way back and forth...it's only 2 miles.

If I can figure an easy way to ride with all my gear and pack to some of my new spots I might just do that.

I broke two Giant frames and got hurt pretty bad because of one.

Fisher and Specialized are my favs. This is my first Specialized. I've been a loyal Fisher guy for 15years.

How in the H E double hockey sticks did you do that. Do you think it was solely the Giant Frame, or would another frame have broken to ?

One top tube weld broke the other was the front fork (dating myself) before I had front suspension. Try riding a steep down hill with 3-4 inch rock and loosing a front wheel. Not cool.

Fishers have been great to me.
Tas, Sur, Mt. Tam, and a Sugar 1. All good rides for me.

The Stumpy Pro blows them away now...

We use bikes quite a bit because of all the locked gates in our area.
Killed a raghorn and a big six pt bull a few yrs. ago. Slung the quarters of the small bull over the bike frame and two of us pushed it back to the truck. Used horses for the big bull. :velo1: :movehorse:

Rode walkers ranch here in CO, which kick my butt, but was super fun...came around a corner and almost collided with a fat doe...a bit later a crazy grouse ran across the trail. Not only is it a good way to get to spots, but is also a great tool for scouting...Ben

no sure why the PM wouldnt go thru, I have gotten two since my last log in from other members.....

Anyways, the XCT2 looks really sweet.
Good Componants, Great Fork, disk brakes, Dbl wall rims....
The only thing I would change down the road is a better saddle and maybe better tires to suit my style of riding but it looks to be a FINE MTB.

I started doing it this year and I ride a Rocky Mountain Element full suspension. I carry my bow on my Badlands Superday. Sure speeds up the time getting in!
