My units hold some excellent elk on public land. I hunt in units 70, 71, 711, 72 & 73 during archery season. In my opinion the best time to hunt elk is in late September up high!

Hopefully the temperatures won't be in the 80's this September like they were last year. I heard one Elk bugle the whole week and it was on the first day. Unit 411 was a bust and it :rain: on my parade.

Question for you Colorado Outfitter. Lets say you are hunting with a guide and he is set up 40 yards down from you calling. You as the hunter hear hoofs coming your way but are not actually sure if they are in front of you or behind you. You get ready for a shot nevertheless. Then behind you comes 3 cows and a 5x5 but they stop behind some thick brush at 30 yards. You know they are there and are at full draw waiting for them to walk into a clearing for a shot. At this point the guide is in the brush 10 yards from the Elk. What would you do as the guide???

I would hope that my hunter would follow the first basic rule of hunter safety. And have enough commen sense to not shoot an arrow in my direction!! There is no animal worth a human life!

I don't disagree with you. Lets say that the Elk were not in a straight line between hunter and guide but rather at a 45 degree angle. Yardages used are for examples only. I'm sure you have run into people that disreagard safety but I'm not talking about a hunter shooting in your direction. You as the guide are hidden in the brush so what's your next move? Do you call, basically on top of the animals or just wait back and see what they do???

I would be as quite as possible and wait to see if the elk move into an opening for my hunter to make a clear shot. If the elk started to spook I would then cow call to make them stop again. Hoping when they stop the second time my hunter could make an ethical shot!

I use the base bag 35+ degree these are not really small & light like mountaineering mummy bags are.
I use a silk liner and hot hands for cold nights, but Im a sweaty sleeper, the wiggy is the most roomy bag I could find, I HATE mummy bags, I would carry a 10 lb bag if it was what it took to get a good night sleep.

How do you camp when Elk huntin there?
Rosies or Rockys?

Maybee-R

Rocky.. and we stay at home. then drive up and hike to where we hunt.
You can drive within 12 miles of anywhere here in Washington. I have never hunted wilderness type hunting. (State Land and Private property)I do like to stay in a cabin on my uncles place once and a while. You guys have the real Hunting country out there.

Roosevelt tags are draw?Roosevelt Elk are more west from me and to the south. Im sure we have mostly cross breeds like the deer are Mulie/Blacktail cross. Not big enough for any books for mule deer and to big for Blacktail. all Big bulls are draw. Spike or cow is general season. But I do have 7 points this year I only put in for a very limited unit. they give out 13 tags now was 20. but its worth the wait.

Elk hunting ? should you blind call? or is that not a good Idea. I have bugled to locate. But I wonder if cow calling from a dark canyon would get things rolling better.
and while im jacking your thread L-Train. what kinda pack do you use? Sorry again.:crutch:

Thats what this thread is for!
I call very little, unless they are talkin then Ill try to say what they want to hear. Elk here get so much pressure I think blind calling CAN be bad.
I use a Eberlestock Just One (j104) pack.
To Bens Mntnbiking, I found a spot last year perfect for the bike, about a 4-6 mile Bike ride into area, will use old baby trailer for hauling. Should be fun.

There are times that I find a bull that wants to bugle back and forth and is looking for a good fight. This is definately the most fun that you will ever have!! But the majority of the time I bugle mainly to locate. Usually once I get a bull to start talking I can just cow call him the rest of the way in. There is definately nothing wrong with "blind" calling. Just dont over do it!!

Anybody else using tree stands or ground blinds over water. We have pretty good luck on dry yrs using this method. Try to keep the calling to a min. when sitting on water.

this year in going to try setting up a spike camp and hunting some more remote areas than i did last year. there was soooo much water last year i didnt even think about it. if i ever get drawn for AZ i might think about a ground blind but i prob would not use one.

I cut some major weight from the pack this year.
I got a sil tarp instead of tent, huge difference, probably only use if weather looks fair. I use a emergency tinfoil like cheap bivy, its great its roomy and adds warmth to the sleep bag.Instead of a pad Im using garbage bags packed with pine needles, I tried it when campin mem. day weekend, you can make a way more comfy pad than a little thermarest, and carry weight is minimal.
Overall saving 4-5lbs

Even though I "know where that is", I'd have a hard time finding it. That's some hard country to navigate in. Go too high or low and/or pick the wrong bench to traverse, you'll end up in the entire wrong place. Cool place for sure. I'm trying to figure out how to get pics off my cell phone of the bulls I've been watching near my house. Eight bulls that will all be 300+ - on a 5000 acre ranch of course.

My bivy setup, its gotten very light and compact with ditching a tent and thermarest.
Now I use a siltarp, space bivy, and a big contractor bag to stuff with pine needles, works better than the thermarest.
And thats the new JP9 Blue Widow pack.

One recommendation, get a Slogan Bowsling and you will thank me.

No I am not endorsed but I won't hike the mountains or hunt without mine and it weighs nothing and will also carry stuff well too.
