Started trapping for coons, it's fun an I don't have any stress from my buddies! All my buddies deer hunt and they're constantly at me if I don't shoot something, none of them trap so they don't care if I get something or not. Here's three I've gotten so far

Are those top ones skinned out? Nice job on those. What are you going to do with the pelts?

Yeah they're skun out! Gonna keep bottom one to make a possibles bag out of, give one of top to my son and other to my nephew. Like to get a 28lber to hang in living room, but with fresh snow it's gonna be a little hard to come by. I'm just trapping for fun and relaxation, don't plan to sell any this year. All I catch this year are my guinea pigs, so next year I'll know what I'm doing.

I always wanted to try trapping, but for the most part it's useless in Texas unless your just trying to thin out animals. I do have a nice beaver pelt but he was shot not trapped.

What kind of traps you using?

Christina, the hide would be tanned with hair off and then I would cut hide then sew it to look like a bag. I use Duke Dog Proof traps, they look like a soda can almost. Only animals that can be caught in them are coons or possums.

Cool, I was gonna recommend them to you if you was using something different. I'm about to get about a dozen and start thinning out coons at my lease. What are you using for bait/attractant?

You ever brain tan? They say every animal has enough brains to tan its own skin. I'd like to learn how to do it.

Richard, I've heard of it have no clue as to how to do it! This is my first year so I'll just send them out to get tanned so I know they're done "right". Sean, I caught the two boars on straight blended sardines on bottom of trap. The female I caught using marshmallows and a lure called Laughing Lady. It smells like strawberries. Figures, guys like meat and females like sweets! Please don't get offended Christina, it was a joke! ;-)

Trapping is addicting. Years ago even here in Jersey I used to trap. As a kid i would check my traps early in the AM and the bus would pick me up somewhere along it's route usually a couple miles from my house, then I would put the critters (mostly muskrats) in a bag and store them in the schools fridge. The school never figured out what I was having for lunch because they never checked.

Took my almost 5yr old son with me this morning to check my traps and we had a little luck! We walked up and I seen this nice boar coon in the trap and pointed it out to my son and he said "that is awesome Daddy", I think he's hooked! He's excited to check the traps with me tomorrow!!
