View Full Version : Bent cable guard rod...?

I've been having a helluva time trying to get my Hunter to tune. It will not tune down the center. My spine is perfect, timing is even better and my cams have basically no lean. I am shooting with what everyone would call almost perfect form. (it feels perfect....) Not punching the release, grip is perfect. What could it be......
Anyway, I put it on the draw board and it turns out that my cables are hitting my string stop at full draw. This can basically only mean one thing:
My cable guard rod is bent or cracked.
This basically completely sucks. There is nothing wrong with the bow, but the cable guard is most certainly effed up. I have not dropped the bow, dry-fired it, stepped on it or ran it over with the truck, so I don't see how it is bent...?
What is happening is that my cables are hitting my string stop at full draw and I think they are causing some torquing/tuning issues. Whatever it is doing, It is causing my bow to tune way right of center (well over 1/16" under the 3/4" suggested min...)
If you look at the attached pics, you will see where the cables are hitting the string stop and actually making a little mark on them. (Obviously it's only a little mark because the rubber flexes out of the way for the most part, but the cables still hit it enough to leave a mark...) You can also see that they are in-line to touch it at rest. I attached more pics for everyone to look at and mabey help me out.
It looks like I am going to need a new cable guard rod......

Yup. I just took the rod off and sure enough it is bent right where it comes out of the riser. There is a dent in it right where it hits the riser. Other than that, it's barely noticable unless you roll it across a flat table.
So now what?

Contact Elite and they will send you a new one. I had one crack too and they took care of me.

So I'm not the only one...? Do you think they would send me one of the 2012 versions that are curved aluminum? I think I would rather have one of those....
I guess all I can do is call and ask...

Call Elite.
They sell the newer offset bent ones for an astronomical $6!
Got one for my 09 XLR for tuning purposes and to reduce some cam lean.
Just contact them. Relax....it's not the end of the world man!

How would that work when the holes on the new bows for the cable rod are not drilled straight in like on your bow?

If it is bent why can't you rotate it to where it needs to be and then tighten it up again?

I don't know how the new bows' hole are oriented. Show me some pics.

I could have been wrong about the new cable slide rod, it may be drilled straight in not at an angle. Looks might be deceiving from the pics I've seen.

It is made from fiberglass. If I turn it, it will just bend the other way and then crack all the way. I'm just gonna do it right and get a new one from Elite.
I'll let everyone know what happens as soon as I get a chance to call them.
Thanks for the help,

When you call, get the aluminum rod AND a carbon one, then you can experiment to see which you like best.

That's exactly what I just did.
Karian (sorry if I spelled your name wrong...) was a pleasure to talk to as usual and she does a great job. I ordered an Aluminum one and a Carbon one. She said the all the Aluminum ones are currently being used on thier actual 2012 bows, so they will take a while, but the Carbon one should be here soon.
Then I talked to the Tech. Dept. and asked some other little questions about limb deflecion and cam lean that had been praying on my mind....

P.S. If you are wanting to buy a 2012 Aluminum cable rod, it is $12 plus shipping (I think it's like $3.00 standard shipping...?) Like I said above, they are all currently being used on thier bows, but they will start shipping before too long....

I tried to copy a rod like on the K@K bows. Bend it so it would let the cables just touch the arrow at full draw and pull them away to stock measurements at rest.
Didnt like it. It works but on the Pure it allows the cables to rub the string suppressor rod. I didnt want to bend it too. tossed the Idea.

Nice, that's good info, Rick.
Just saved me some time spent just to realize something I already knew... my cables are barely off of my string stopper on the Pulse at full draw. LOL!

Yeah I tried the rod off my Vengeance on my gt500 ( just eyeballed it ) Its to close for me and Im scared in a hunting situation if I torques it or shoot in an odd position I may cause some severe POI issue on my target . Besides that my gt500 is tuned with the original guard . I dont need to fix that killer

Good info. I was thinking about getting one of the Darton rods (similar to K&K's....same concept) on my Hunter, but then I realized it would only make the issue even worse because the cables would hit the string stop even more at full draw.
I can't wait until I get the aluminum (off-set) rod in so I can see how it does. It prolly won't make a lot of difference, but it's worth a try.....
