View Full Version : Out of tune?

Well, I ended up acquiring a new Z7 to go along with my 08.5 Z28. After shooting both bows side by side there are few things I like about each, and some I don't like. IMHO, the Z28 has a better draw cycle, better back wall, better grip, better fit/finish and holds on target better/easier than the Mathews. The Mathews two strongest points are lack of vibration and noise. It had just a touch of buzz and very slight "thud" at the shot, in fact its not even close in comparison my Z28. I was wondering if there is some way for a backyard archer with limited technical experience around bows to tell if the Z28 was out of tune which is causing the excess vibes and noise, or if its just the way it is. Or even if those symptoms (noise/vibes) could be the result of tuning issue or something else. Would a "good" stabilzer lessen these issues. I have about an 8 year old, 6" doinker multi-rod on now that I got cheap a few years ago. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I might try a B-stinger stab.

Yes a good stab will reduce the vibrations if its a good stabilizer thats designed for both stabilizing and vibration reduction. B-stingers are not in that group. they are more geared towards stabilizing the bow.

I agree the B-Stinger is great for stabilizing but does nothing for dampening. The Elite Stokerized does great for dampening and works good to stabilize once you get some weight on the end like a Saturn weight.

You can swap stabs between the bows.... but it simply may not be as quiet unless you match the dampening accessories. I don't believe that my GT is loud by any means, but I stood next to a bow on the line this week that absolutely put it to shame (in the noise dept). Thank goodness I was outshooting him so I could save some face! :-)

Keep in mind how many dampening accessories each bow has on it. The Elites dont come off the line with all of the string leeches etc... just a STS. A good stabilizer as stated will also help take some of the sound and vib out, and you can always throw a max jax bowjax on any stabilizer to help add some quietness to the bow. The Z28 is normally known for being a quiet bow. My 2010 Z is whisper quiet, but it also has cat whiskers in the string so I lose a few fps but gain some serious quietness. As far as the tuning of the bow, look to see if the drawstops on the bow are about in the same position and if the cams look to be aligned or if one is a little more forward than the other. Other than that on the rev cams you will need a drawboard to check to see about the correct DL and if it is in time.

I agree take all the damping weight adding accessories of the Z and they will shoot about the same.
I use to take all that stuff of my Mathews so I could lose a pound of weight. That’s another day worth of food in the pack.

You are also shooting right off the riser with the Z28. The Mathews has a 1" thick piece of wood between your hand and the riser. Have a friend pull back the bow and count the timing dots on the cams. Should be the same.

Tune the bow, tuning IMO is why elites get a bad rap on noise and vibe, a half twist - twist can make a huge difference.

Thank you! This is more along the line of what I was looking for, if the vibes/noise IS actually a tuning issue.
