We were wading Lost Lake on the south shoreline Galveston and my 17 yr old son Chase had just caught a flounder. He was getting the lure out and took a step and said something just bit the heel of his right foot. Ten seconds later the pain hit. The stinger hit just above the heavy rubber on his wade boot and punched right through the soft neoprene. We got him on the boat and short trip back to the house at Pirates Cove. Loaded him in the back of the truck with his foot in an igloo cooler of hot water. We got him over to UTMB as quick as we could. He was in serious pain. They hit him with some morphine and x-rayed the wound. The doc probed 2" up in the wound channel and found it was an in and out wound with none of the stinger found. They got the wound flushed out and cleaned up. We got him back to the house keeping his foot soaking in hot water and the pain finally subsided about 2am where he could sleep. Have him loaded up on antibiotics now with fingers crossed for no infection to set in.
He had just gone by BassPro last week to grab some raygaurds and they were out. Guys be careful I do not wish this kind of pain on anyone.

Dang and to think Ive been out wading in the surf in galveston quite a bit and not had any bad luck, but have heard that the surf in Galveston is just coated with rays. Def going to wear shoes from now on. One must always remember to shuffle the feet.
Hope it heals quickly and cleanly.

Thanks guys he is doing good. I was raised fishing and swimming on the coast. I was always barefoot or in an old pair of Chuck Taylor high top tennis shoes for the oyster beds. I have several friends that have been hit over the years but I have been really lucky the last 40 yrs. I have stepped on a few but never hit. We will wear ray guards from now on. I never want to see anybody go through that kind of pain again.

I feel bad for him. I hope he heals quickly and without difficulty.
That looks bad. I hope he comes out good on this and it don't get infected. I've been lucky enough to never been hit, but I do the Texas shuffle religiously when surf fishing.

I pray he's OK. Why did you soak his foot in hot water and not ice?

Hot water helps kill the poison in the stinger. Peeing on it helps too.

The doctor said it breaks down the poison and kills the pain. You get it as hot as you can stand it the better. It works Chase would let us know when he needed more hot water when the pain would come back. I asked if Epson salt or antibacterial soap was needed and the Dr said no just hot water.
He did load him up on antibiotic pills. I have heard of guys running the hot water discharge off their boat motors for hot water for stingray hits if they have some distance to cover. Biggest thing to worry about is infection I have seen and heard some horror stories.
Sean that works for Bullneddle too.

Guys Chase is doing great. They did an ultrasound on it last week checking for any foreign matter and infection pockets and all looked good. He is finishing up his antibiotics and it hasn't slowed him down much. He has had to wear sandals and no boots. So he hasn't been able to work his feed store job but he is out on the tractor mowing this morning.

Good to hear Chase is recovering well!:thumb: ...we have too many :censored2: stinger armed things here in Texas. From rattlesnakes, scorpions, and charging boars on land...all the way to sharks and rays in the water.:( You non-Texans have no :censored2: idea how easy you got it.
Anyhow, sucks the hit ended your vaca...but atleast once Chase heals up, he'll have a cool battle scar and story to share.:buddies:
Just seen this OMG! that looks like it hurts!

Been there and done that over in SC. Got hit while taking one off the hook and he hit me in the knuckle on my ring finger. Some of the worse pain I have ever felt. Glad I took my wedding band off. Had to have it resized several times because it took like three months for my knuckle to go back to normal size
