Took my 11 yr old nephew frog gigging last weekend. It was his first time and he stuck those frogs like a pro. Killed a dozen total, but we only had a couple of hours. Here's the two biggest ones:

Nice to see some bullfrogs still around, have noticed a big decline in bullfrogs over the past 10 years. Hopefully they might be coming back. They do make for some good eating.

I've got several places where the bullfrog population is still strong. Some places that look pretty froggy have none. It varies from year to year. Mild winter usually means big frogs.

Now's the time, usually the ponds or creeks are low and the temps dropping a little at night sure makes it nice.......plus it's a great beer drinking sport! :D

Boy that brings back memories growing up we did a lot of frog gigging. I remember getting a good rain and was not unusual to see them in the road. But same down here they have just about disappeared. I have a 10 ac lake behind the house that should be perfect. Has the smaller leopard frogs but no bull frogs. Might have to try to transplant some and get them going.

They say it's the pesticides being used in some areas killing the frogs, or their eggs. There's still good numbers around here for the most part. I saw a Discovery channel show about bullfrogs that were transplanted to somewhere in Arizona. They have no natural predators there and now the population is out of control. The footage was unbelievable. They were harvesting hundreds a night for the study and not putting a dent in their numbers. Makes me want to take a frog hunting vacation to Arizona. We could show those Zonies how rednecks can kill some frogs! :D

Our biggest trick was having 10ft poles on our gigs. Could reach out and touch em without getting too close and spooking them.We had one 25 ac lake we would hit and a bad night was 25-30 frogs and a good night would be over 100 frogs and never even put a dent in them. It was full of alligators, nutria rats, snakes and an endless supply of bull frogs. We would try a new place but usually would end up back in our honey hole before the night was over. Woke up a many of morning on the side of that lake asleep in the back of the truck with a sack full of frogs and what ever else we threw in the boat from the night before. We always had someone wanting an alligator for their pond and transplanted quit a few out of that lake and ate a few. Had one in the back yard for a pet before my wife got tired of it chasing her.LOL

Wow, pet alligator? Sounds pretty funny. We started using a bow with lighted sights a few years ago. That dramatically extended our range and killing power. We used a gig the other night since my nephew had never gone.

I tried that once the arrow went through the frog and almost 2 foot into the muck. Took awhile to dig it out. Guess 70lbs at 10 ft is a little much on a frog.LOL Smash you really would of got a kick out of our pet Nutria we had running around with a cat flea collar. Can you say redneck.:)

The bow I use for frogs is an old Browning signed by Ted Nugent. It's set at 35 or so pounds. It sticks 'em to ground pretty good, but only maybe 8 or 10 inches into the mud. It's really fun.

I'll have to look up a Nutria, I'm not sure what one is.

Smash they are a rat about the size of a opossum. They brought them over here years ago for fur and didn't make it so they were turned loose. They live around water. We are covered up with them and I know Louisiana has their share. Saw a TV show a while back a restaurant had them as a specialty. I'll eat just about anything just haven't quite acquired a taste for nutria or opossum yet. I guess the biggest problem is I have witnessed what they eat.

I have seen the exact same thing. I had a dead cow down by a stand I was hunting and kept seeing the stomach move and shortly a opossum came crawling out the rear end. I caught a bunch as a kid. We would catch them out in the open and run up and kick one and they would roll up and play dead (play opossum). Their tail is neat it will roll up and grab your hand like a finger.

That's funny, we played Opossum soccer when we were kids. Once a few years ago I had one on the porch getting in the dogs food every night. I thought I'd run out and football punt his a$$ off the porch. I was in my underwear and barefoot when I hit the porch, the opossum started for the steps and I got a pretty good run at him. That Opossum must have been eating rocks or hammers cause I nearly broke my ankle kicking the dog food stealer off the porch. I bet it was a funny sight, a fat man in his underwear doing the pain dance, screaming obsceneties while a Opossum flies through the air.

That's 2 pound average per frog! That's outstanding! They just dont get that big here. The biggest one I ever gigged (and I've gigged alot) was 19 1/2 inches long and weighed 1.98 pounds on digital fish scales. It was a stud.
