Went out this morning with a friend of mine (jason) that had taken the whole week off for Turkey hunting. To make a long story short he got his butt kicked... I told him to go out with me, and I'll try to get you on some birds and get it on vid using two different camera angles.
This year I have been fortunate enough to have four places to turkey hunt in West Virginia with birds on all of them. The only problem is figuring out which place the birds going to be vocal at. There is no way I'm going to drive an hour the night before to locate a bird or two. So I pretty much took a big guess and went for it.
This morning I picked the "hayfield farm", This farm is an awesome place for birds, and I have seen them pretty much every time I've been on the property. For some reason this morning all the birds were gobbling across the road in another property. I set up as close as I could and had a feeling that we were wasting our time. Then I get this text from the owner of another farm that I can hunt "the orchard" saying they're Gobbling everywhere at the farm this morning. Well that was a no brainer. We packed our stuff up, and I ran and got the truck. Off we go to the orchard that is only 10 minutes away.
We get to the farm and decide to set up in a corner of the property next to a stand that I call "the Bee Hive" stand. We set up a Jake with three hens one that is laying in front of the Jake, get everything ready and start doing some calling every 15 minutes. 45 minutes passed and we didn't hear or seen a thing. The wood lot next to us is pretty big so I decide to make a loud cackle with my box call and see what happens.
About 15 minutes later I was finishing a sandwich, when I turn to Jason who is sitting next to me. I was about to ask him what he wants to do when I caught movement to my right. It turned out to be two Jakes headed on a b line right to the Jake and pretty much catching us of guard.
With my mouth call on my knee because of just munching down on a sandwich and Jason with both of his hands on his blackberry playing a game we got caught. The bird head right to my Jake and started trying to kick its butt. Jason grabbed his gun and they cought him in the process. They started moving to my right and Jason threw one at the lead bird and missed. Both birds got up in flight and somehow he got another shell in the chamber and shot at the second bird in flight at about 10 feet in the air and dropping it to the ground. The only thing I could think of was I didn't get this on film. We both looked at each other and banged knuckles and said what just happened. I said you just shot Bambi, HEHEHE.
All in all I was happy for Jason, it might have just been a Jake but for Jason it was a well earned bird.
