i got a buddy that's going to be building me a rifle and i need a few specs that i can't seem to find.
I need to know what size bolt face i'd need for a 7mmSTW; .300RUM; or .340WBY MAG?? anyone know. i'm lookin to pick up a used and beatin up Remington model 700 to steal the receiver from.. gonna get a Lilja Chrome-Moly barrel in a #6 countour and fluted with a finished barrel length of 24". H.S. Precision PV series stock in the green and tan camo finish, and probably a jewel trigger.
what caliber rifle do i need to find a reciever for him to use to make my rifle?? i haven't asked him yet cause i'm still up in the air over caliber.

thanks... i'm not wanting to have to get the faced opened up and buying a Sako extractor to replace the factory one because he'd have to mill it out..
now i just need to figure out what other cartridges have the same base diameter...
for some reason i can't find my Hornady, or Nosler reloading books..:noidea:

Sounds like your building a nice rifle! I want a custom rifle one day but have been spending too much $$$ on archery to have one built.

i'll post some pics of it after he's done. i've just got to buy the parts, he's gonna do all the machining and what not for free. barrel and reciever are gonna be parkerized. it should be a shooter. hopin to bust something with it in the near future.

Bummer ! I had a 700 barreled action ! I swapped it for archery crap. Any way, a long action for long cartridges- 30/06,270,7x57, 300mag,7mm mag, and all the wetherby rounds will be long action. Short action are 308,243 or 6mm, and of coarse all the SAUM's from Remington and Winchester. If you reload and plan on using heavy bullets I would stay with a long action, especially with the Remington action as they keep pretty tight tolerances, or they used to. I really had to stay on the shorter lengths and some times shoot single shot with the rounds that were to long. So really the caliber will determine action length. When you decide on your caliber just tell your gunsmith what you want and he will let you know what you need. The rem 700 is in my opinion the best mass produced rifle action in the world, But if you want custom all the way there used to be an outfit called The Montana Rifle Works that makes a tough action as well as others like Sako who sells barreld actions and may save you some time and a small amount of money .

I have a 300rum it packs a punch at the range but you know you never feel any kick in the field. I'v taken two white tail with it so far. I really like it can't wait to work up some loads.
