Whacked the 10 pt that I had been chasing. I saw this buck twice during bow season and could'nt get him in range. I was gun hunting the area yesterday and he chose the wrong doe to follow. He chased her about 40 yards from me and the 139 gr Hornady SST did the rest. A short 20 foot stagger and he took a dirt nap! I green scored him last night at 140 inches and change. Not a monster, but good enough for me.

I have'nt seen much rutting activity lately either. He was just trying to get that LAST one. Fatal mistake. Funny how women can get you in so much trouble.

The rifle I used is one of my new experiments. It's an old M96 Swedish Mauser action with a new Shilen match grade barrel. Tack driver. This action has had about 4 different barrels (calibers) on it and I think this one will stay a while. The last barrel was a wildcat 6.5x284. Blazingly fast and super long range, I shot it so much varmint hunting that I wore the rifling out. Crows would explode into at least three pieces with a 95 gr. V-max bullet.

Thanks for the kinds words guys! (and gal)

Alright as long as its a mauser its ok. Sounds cool, I have a 6.5x55 swede mauser, its a awesome gun, 1905 I think on the action and its perfect, smooth too. Totally custom cherry wood stock my G-pa did.

This one was originally a 6.5 Swede. Good little round. The action is 1906 year and very smooth as well. No telling how many shots that thing has cycled through. It's still in excellent condition and working order. They don't build 'em like they used to.

A 140" deer is a good deer to me and most anybody. Great job!

Congratulations Smash on a great deer. Now that the rut is winding down, the probability that I'll get a buck with my bow is quite a bit less so the .270 may have to come out of the closet again.

Thanks man,
Late season food sources is where I'd be, but my buck hunting is over this year. :profanity: I think I'll take some aggression out on some slickheads!

7mm-08 is my deer caliber as well, I am using Barnes 120gr tipped TSX bullets at 2950fps, accurate and low recoil. I shoot them out of a stainless Rem 700 with an H-S precision stock and a 3 1/2 trigger. Killed one last season 300yds.

When I bought my Encore ML, I also bought a 300 Win Mag barrel and a nice leupold scope. I havent taken it hunting yet...just sighted it in. Im hoping to swap out barrels and get my first 'centerfire rifle' deer kill the week after next. Im hitting my buddys place in the mountains...does are in and its bear country too!:D Im itchin to see what the 300 will do on a little 70# doe.:)

Massive wound channels and instant death, that's what a 300 Win Mag will do. Especially if you use a 150 gr. bullet. The 300 is one of my fav cartridges. Be prepared to throw away an entire shoulder though, unless you only hit ribs. Sometimes there's not enough animal to make the bullet really open up and do its job. It can zip right through little whitetails and not even knock them down, but they still die rather quickly. Good luck man!!!
