I had the opportunity to take a young lad to the woods today to see if I could help make his dream come true. He wanted to try and harvest a "Thanksgiving Turkey", which would be his first successful hunt ever. He had been a few times with different guys but had never had any luck. His dad asked me if I would take him hunting and I agreed. His dad is suffered a bad injury and is recovering from it but it will be months before he is able to even attempt to take his son hunting. Beside the fact that he's not a hunter and knows nothing about the woods, he still wanted his son to get a chance to have the experience! Here's the "unedited" story written by the young man that goes by the screen name Doeboy on our site. Thought y'all might enjoy it! :)

Me and Nat Dad wake up at 5:00 its pouring. I'm like oh no! So i check my phone every 5 min to see the new Doppler radar sheet. I found a break and told Nat Dad he said OK. Go get dressed so we go out there around 6:50 and the rain starts a cranken. As we drove out there he said this isn't good, I was like oh well I'm outside and it feels good. I'm thankful he came out there with me with his hurt foot anyway. We get out there park, about 1,000 yards from our blind so as we get out there I was like I hope I don't slip cause my feet get stuck. So I got out there and learned how to walk easier by listening to what Nat Dad said about walking light. Made my life alot easier. So I'm walking following him and he's doing hand signals stopping every 40 feet, looking then he stops and I look and we are there. I was like wow, that was quick so we set up ground seats and he was teaching me about how if I move then I need to move smoothly so we don't get caught.

So then the rains start to pick up. He's sitting there looking around and so am I and he says if we only have a hour without or have little rain, he could call them in and 30 minuets go by and he's like Doeboy, I was like yes sir and he said we forgot to pray! So he prayed and then 30 min later it lightend up he starts using the box call and yelped to let them know where we were. He said they were still in the trees because of the rain. Then 20 min later rain is coming back. Nat Dad said you know what were gunna wait it threw. 30 min later I was about to tell him to call again but he read my mind reach to grab the turkey call.

Then I see him stop. I was like alright I'm lookin and he's like Doeboy... right there 4 Jakes were coming through a path but there is a tree in my way and so Nat Dad was like get your gun up. I didnt do it cause he couldent see the turkeys on my side that were staring at me so I waited. Then the turkey looked away then Nat Dad said again pick up your gun. I did and of course the Jakes were moving around behind the tree so i couldent see them but I did not want them to fly away if I moved so I waited.

Then one crossed right in front of me Nat Dad thought it was the older one with the longer beard but it was the younger one so then I started aiming. They started walking away and I was like NO! Then once Nat Dad saw my side he said shoot! I put the bead at the bottom base of the turkeys neck and pulled. It kicked, I was looking through the smoke and saw him fall over and his wings were flapin then he stopped. Me and Nat Dad were rollin in the mud in the blind, high fivin and huggin we were so happy. It was AWESOME so then we go over and pick him up and Nat Dad showed me how to pick up a turkey by his feet. We were both so happy so then we took some pics and headed home we cleaned him and he taught me how to clean a turkey in the rain. It was greatest and he's a great mentor and fun to be around. So then we head out and grabbed a bite to eat and celebrate and here are some pics.

That is awesome. Nice job to both of you. I know it's hard to tough out the weather sometimes, but alot of times it pays off like with you two. You should both be proud of yourselves. Nat Dad for helping out a new hunter, showing them the ropes, & doeboy for a great shot on a hard animal to take. Nice story also!:woohoo:

That is awesome! Congrats Doeboy, way to stick it out. Great story and thanks for sharing. Way to be Nat Dad.

What really sticks out to me is that this young hunter (and a hunter he is) is ON THIS FORUM. That should make us all think before we type.

Cordwood....we were minutes from heading back to the UTV as the temps dropped, the rain increased and we were suffering for sure!! That one little break in the constant rain was a BIG blessing! Thanks again guys for the comment and Hope you ALL have a Happy Thanksgiving Day with your families!! :)
