People beware!!! If you own a Nikon Rangefinder and have an issue with it and you own it over 1 year your in for a big surprise.
I sent a rangefinder back to Nikon for repair. I owned it over the warranty period. The repair cost was $178.00 and I paid $199 for it new.
I explained my case to the Nikon Customer service person and was told it is out of warranty and if I wanted fixed it will be 178.00 dollars. For a product I only used two months during hunting season it was clearly a factory defect. I thought Nikon was a quality company with quality products. Never again will I own a Nikon....

Wow.. Sorry to hear about that. IF you had the Nikon without angle I bet it would have been cheaper to buy my or somebody's old Nikon. I won an archers choice a year ago almost to the day and it quit reading at lots of objects especially 3D targets. I took it back to Cabela's yesterday and they just gave me a new one. I am however thinking it reads about 2+ yards hot at 70-80 yards. I am thinking a bout tasking it back and maybe they will let me upgrade?
I was surprised to read in the instructions how a black target is not good and cloudy days are best. I guess no hogs, boars, or other dark targets...

on a better note, I lost my battery cover for my compact 800 Bushnell. It was my fault and saw that it was like $8 for a new one. I just emailed their customer service to ask the preferred type of payment and the reply was to just send back my address and model and they would send a new one! Definately a loyal customer now!

That is a real bummer. I like my Nikon so much better then my Bushnell. On the bright side I have been luck and never had any issues with my Nikon.

On another side i have a Nikon SLR camera which i recently sent in for repair because i had it at the beach and it got sand all inside it! They fixed it up like brand new and sent a bill for $0 since it was less than a year old.

I think the point of this thread was to warn of Nikon products that are out of warranty. Just my observation. I have a set of Nikon binoculars that I tried to have repaired, but they wanted too much. I wasn't going to pay 100 dollars for something that was cheaper than that brand new. I agree, Nikon is terrible.:mad0215:

They wont repair rangefinders. They do how ever do well for Binos.
Bushnell the same way. There still awesome Randgefinders and I bought another one and its worked for many years. Does suck!

Well thanks so much for clarifying. now the point of MY post was to say on the other hand they do very well with their products that ARE still under warrenty. Understand?
Or am I not allowed to post unless I agree or say the same exact thing as the OP?
Excuse my sarcasm... you caught me on a bad day.

It is my understanding that most companys have limited warrantees on rangefinders due to the electronics involved, on the other hand I had a Nikon buckmaster scope that never held zero right out of the box. Tried to get it replaced through Nikon 2 days after purchase and they would only fix it if I payed the shipping. After fighting with them I took it back to the store where I purchased it and they took care of me. Needless to say I diddnt get another Nikon!!

My point of my post was two fold. First I was upset with Nikon and the rangefinder and secondly their repair cost was too high and I just need to vent.
I like the rangefinder when it worked. My mistake was not sending it back during the warranty period. It acted up on me every once and awhile but always worked again. I only used it two bow seasons which was a totall of four months over this time. I never dropped it or got it wet. Finally, It just stopped working.
I believe a product should work longer than that. Being out of warranty I did not expect Nikon to repair it for nothing. However, I did expect something less than what they quoted. I am not sure what it cost Nikon to make a rangefinder but I think it would be less than $178.00 Maybe a range finder at cost would have made me happy since I do feel that their product was defective.
That all...:)

Have to update my experience with Nikon. After several conversations with Nikon CS. they agreed with me and sent me a new 550 to replace my defective 440. I must say I am a happy camper now but if I wasn't persistent with my request I am not sure if I would have had the same outcome.

Pleasing you is easier, and cheaper, than negative posts on the web about their produces! Glad it worked out for you!!!

Interesting...
I've had good customer service with Nikon thus far. I personally lost an lens cover for a spotting scope and they replaced it free of charge. My dad had a set of binos with an issue and they fixed it for very cheap, and quickly at that.
Good information on the rangefinders, though, as I do have a Riflehunter. Hopefully it holds up for me, as it sounds the CS might be working differently in that department...

they are still priceless to me because they make the only rangefinder that I have found that shoots thru the mesh on my groundblinds
