Well, after three years of bowhunting very hard. I nailed this bad boy, after a special invite to Kansas. I was thrilled to land him, especially only having two days to get the job done! He's not the biggest boy in the woods, but he's mine!!!!

Oh trust me, I've shot my fair share of does, the last 2-3yrs, and have PASSED on numerous smaller bucks. IT really makes you think twice about pulling the trigger on a small buck, when you live in a one buck state with a FOUR MONTH archery season!!!:cheese:

Thanks guys. I was REALLY hoping that the 170" monster that was in the area would give me a shot, but it didn't happen in the time frame I had. Talk about a BIG MONKEY off my back!!!

Yep, doing it myself. Trying the "no boil" method. Just soaking in water, and changing every week.

Awesome! ...I need to learn more about the 'no boil' method and I dont want to jack your thread. I have a friend that shot a deer during bow...found it several weeks later during gun in a swamp. He brought the head back and I was amazed how little needed to be done to be close to 'euro status'. Looked like some scrubbing and peroxide..and he'd be done. The rack got a little discolored on one side where it was submergered but all-in-all it looked good.
Right now im doing the 'dermestid-rat method'...so there is alot of room for improvement. I want to protect the horns and save the rub-shavings and color. I guess I could wrap plastic wrap/aluminum foil or something over it to half way seal it. Then drop it in a tub of water. We'll have to start a new thread on our euro projects soon.

Hey 'snow-angel'...hows the no boil method coming? Ive got my mine sitting in a 5gal bucket with water up to the rack line. We've had some strange weather this winter...week before last we had some record breaking 77 degree days. Now its back to below freezing at night. I checked my deers head a couple days ago and there are big maggots frozen in the ice. ...ya, this thread could get nasty cus I plan on posting pics soon!

Well, the smell kind of took over the basement, so I put it out back in the garage. (unheated) It's been going through freezing stages for the last two weeks. I just figured, that the water (or ice) can't really hurt the bone, so I'll just let it sit there and rot! :D
The meat is all stringy and white though!

Congrats on the buck nebling, it sounds like a truly memorable hunt.
I know several taxidermists and none of them like doing European mounts because of the mess, smell and hassle. One of them told me it probably costs him $20 to do one but he charges $120 because he doesn't want to have to do very many of them. I know there are places you can buy the beetles that will strip the skull for you, but they say that process really stinks as well.

I also heard that the beetles are hard to buy via mail order. I read a good article about the no boil method working well, but it just takes time. They say it also does NOT hurt the skull/sinus bones like boiling!!

Thats good to know. I have definetly done things in the wrong order. Im too eager to get it done. Anyhow, the otherday I had some time and was checking the head out again. I figured it might help speed things along if I cut away more of the hide, ears, nose, and neck base. During the smelly grotesque process I got the tongue out too. Anyhow, im proud of myself for not puking but I did ruin a pair of gloves and it all might of just been a waste of time. Because Im not touching that thing again until hot weather comes along and I can let the bugs finish the rest!
I took pics but im embarrassed to post them and they might not be in good taste or disrespectful to the animal or something along those lines. Anyhow, safe to say ive got a new respect for taxidermists fo-sho! :hail:
