View Full Version : Maasai Broadheads

Today I got my first chance to try out the Alaska Bowhunting Supply Maasai Broadheads that have the single bevel edge. I was really excited to try these heads after reading Dr. Ed Ashby's report on how a single bevel creates more tissue and bone damage during penetration. After receiving them in the mail, my excitement quickly waned as I read on the package that they came in that they were made in CHINA!!!!!!! They looked really good on the website and almost looked like they were just like Silver Flames which are made in Germany. If you know Germans, you know that they are very proud individuals and take pride in their craftsmanship. These broadheads did not feel very sharp out of the package but I suppose I can get them sharper. I was shooting broadheads out to 30 yards today and my testing was for accuracy and necessary spine requirements out of my short brace Energy's. I was shooting 100gr, 125gr and 125gr XL Silver Flames and 100gr Maasai's. The Silver Flames were just as accurate as ever just like they are out of all my bows but the Maasai's were just ok. I could get them to hit close but what I couldn't understand is why I would keep getting "flyers" out of them. I really think it is a disservice not to mention that these are Chinese made broadheads on the website especially since they are in the same price range as the Silver Flames. I almost feel as though I have been deceived and will probably be contacting ABS to see what can be worked out. These broadheads are nowhere in the same ballpark as Silver Flames as far as accuracy or sharpness and should be priced much lower because of this. They may be devastating broadheads but they must be sharp(er) and you must be able to hit what you are aiming at.

Good review 5by, interesting results. Did you spin them at all to see how they do in that arena? It is really dissappointing to hear they are made in China for that price.

No Lonnie I did not spin test them today. I was shooting outside at the shop. They do have an arrow spinner inside but it never crossed my mind at the time since the SF's were shooting so awesome. I have a large Apple arrow spinner here at home and when I get a chance I'll check that out. Good call bro.

Sorry to hear this but I am not really surprised. I bought some of their arrows that were supposed to be spined for 100# bow (Grizzly stiks and Banshees 300). I thought that they looked nice like the broadheads do but when you put the nocks in the nock diameter is smaller than the arrow shaft so it looks bad, but I figured that I could get past that if they would fly good. I fletched three arrows and compared them to my aluminums and they were all over the place so I did the spin test and they were wobbling all over the place and I couldn't figure out why, so I take out my calipers to measure the arrow thickness and it turns out that the arrow is almost twice as thick on one side as it is on the other which makes the hole way off center. I am going to see if maybe I can get them to fly half way decent out of my recurve because there is noway they are going to work out of a compound.

Jeff, thanks for the review and interesting findings. It is hard to better Markus's Silverflames, I thought of using the Maasai BH and got one to look at, they look good, but flight were also a bit loopy.
So I'm using the 180 gr Silverflame in September on the Cape Buffalo hunt, Markus's quailty is next to none and well worth the price.

Good review Jeff. I am considereing the Silver Flames( or a similar type head) for one of my set ups this year.
Glad to see you have eliminated one option for me.

It was a very expensive elimination judgement on my part too. Hopefully they will keep me happy and let me trade them in for some more SF's

Believe me I tried but they said their accounting wasn't set up to do that. Tried to trade them straight up for some more SF's.
