Guys,

i am going to give Gainesville a go this year, my first asa, first real 3-d shoot period.

Here is what i have
70lb gt500
10in posten stab
sword twlight hunter sight 6 pins

Which pin gaps would work best for bow novice? i was thinking 15 to 30yds in 5 yd increments

Arrows: looks like i will try some easton 340 fatboys, and turn my bow down some to get within the speed limit

any suggestions or advice??? No really wanting to buy anything new except for arrows

I think the FatBoy 340's would be a good choice. I have my first pin set at 20 yards. I don't know about where you're getting ready to shoot at, but at our 3D shoots here in Indiana, we have alot of targets out to as far as 45 yards. Just something to think about. Hope this helps.

I agree, I dont see where you would need a 15 yd pin, lots of the guys around here start at 25 and go from there. one of the best hunter class shooters ive ever shot with used 2 pins one at 25 and one at 35. that dude was death to a 10 ring.

I have sword twilight set in 10 yd incerments 20-50 and a 55.

I have my pins set on all my bows in 10 yard increments starting at 20 yards and i just shoot the gaps for 25,35,45, and 55.

If he is shooting the hunter class in asa they have some targets that might be shorter than 320 yds, nothing longer than 40

actually, bow novice is 30 yd max that is why i asked

i dont think having my current set up 20 to 70 yds in 10 yd increments is going to be of much help

If I were shooting bow novice I would set three pins. First one at 20, second at 26 and the third at 31. this will give you some room inbetween your pins so you can see what you're aiming at. Even though your max is 30 yrds they do set a couple over like 31 or 32. You will be shooting all known distances so you should be able to zone in on some of those 12 and 14 rings. Good luck.

The 1st thing I would do is shoot your bow through a chrono and make sure you are under 287fps - would suck to be DQed at your first 3d.

Also if I remember correctly Bow Novice is all known, so you wont have to judge yardage. This being said if you are used to practicing/hunting with your pins set 20 30 40 50 etc. Leave it alone, if you set it at off yardage you arent used to, youll step up to a target marked 29, think no prob put the 2nd pin on her and aim a bit low, but if you say set your 2nd pin at 25 trying to be fancy and forget you just nailed a 5, may even want to set 2 pins a 20 and 30, and move the rest to the bottom, Keep it as simple as you can, you will be shooting in at a big event with people you dont know, dont want to overthink things. Ive seen guys on known days in Open B fly a target because they forgot to change their yardage.

Also if possible turn your bow down, 70lbs will smack them targets like no ones business.

And most of all have fun, dont worry about your score, make some new friends, and shoot your bow.

Shoot the chrono once you get there and make sure your under 288, your gonna need to be shooting a heavy arrow to get it slow enough. My 60 pounder is set at 55 lbs and shooting 340 grain arrow and it's at 286. Novice is only 30 yard max so I'd only have two pins and they'd be 010 cause your gonna want to shoot at 12's or 14's (if you're confident that is). I'd set a 20 yard pin and probably a 28yd pin, I don't like to hold under the spot, so for anything that's 30 yards hold on the top of the 12 and you will still hit the 12. I'd shoot the 20 at 14 and 15 yards (practice) to make sure you are still in the 12 with that pin (hold on the bottom of the 12 and you should still be in the 12. My 20 yard pin will shoot from 14-23 dead on, from 24-30 I use my 28 yard pin. It's better to be able to see more target through your pins otherwise you lose your spot.
